5 Inspirational Quotes (and why they suck)
1. “Dance like nobody’s watching.”
-What is the point of that? Don’t get me wrong, dancing is a lot of fun, but only when you’re with a lot of people. That’s why people go to clubs. That’s why there are dance companies, (and even if you’re just solo, people are watching you.) That’s why it’s lame as hell when only one person dances at a wedding. The fun in dancing comes not just from your carefree movement to the rhythm of the music, but from the collective dancing of the people around you too. If nobody is watching, what’s the point?
2. “Live each day as if it were your last.”
-Maybe I’m in the minority, but my last day on earth would probably be spent in a hospital bed (or at least a death bed) surrounded by family members crying. What part of that is supposed to be fun or meaningful? The phrase should be, “live each day as if it were a few months before it were your last.” That way you at least have time to cherish the moments before your inevitable end.
3. “If your dreams don’t scare you, they’re not big enough.”
-They have another word for dreams that are essentially terrifying. They’re called nightmares.
4. “When one door closes, another door opens.”
-As is, this quote isn’t so bad. Except that it’s a dirty lie. It’s never only one door that closes, it’s several. Sometimes one bad thing sets off a chain reaction of many bad things. If you lose your job, you might lose your house, maybe your marriage. Another door might have opened but there’s significantly less light than before.
5. “The difference between ordinary and extraordinary is just that little ‘extra.’”
-No shit, Sherlock.
